Western Washington University Campus Directories

I designed and produced the cover and insides of an 180 page telephone and departmental directory. For the 2009-10 directory I took an image of a phone and manipulated it into a 'Warhol' effect using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. For the contents, there were existing files in inDesign, but the new data came in from a database. Many of the updates were made manually from printed paper, but a lot of it was in the form of Excel files. Without any instruction from the previous designer, I was able to figure out how to import data from Excel into InDesign, automatically assigning styles to the data in their particular cells. It is about a 10-step process.

Physics and Astronomy

The Physics and Astronomy department asked me to put together a brochure to recruit students into their program. I took all the photos except the outdoors photo and the one with the student and teacher standing in front of what used to be a yellowish wall. The data came in the form of Word docs. The brochure is a tri-fold and the black on the front was bled slightly around to the back panel in case the fold was off.

ATUS Hallway Poster

Every quarter ATUS (Academic Technology and User Services) put out a newsletter. Which meant every month I got to produce a newsletter in print, then convert it into a web site. Fortunately I had a tech savvy student who did the heavy copy/paste work into the html template. For the photos I'd simply prepare two versions; black and white for the newsletter and color/lower res for the web. One of the newsletters was more of an introductory to our entire operations that we recycled each year, and someone thought it would be a good idea to put it up for all to see as a poster. This is the result. Last time I checked it was still up, and no one had even drawn mustaches on anyone.

I took all but one of the pictures, and aged them in Photoshop.

International Tsunami Museum

I took David Sattler's imagery and text, and with the help of a translator, also included text in Thai. The posters shown here are nine feet long.

"In March 2006, I came up with an idea to build an educational museum in an area especially hard hit by the tsunami. A museum could help people understand the event that changed so many lives by showing how the Indian Ocean tsunami formed, showing how the tsunami affected the environment, and how foundations, organizations, businesses, and individuals around the world rallied to help. Exhibits in the museum also could discuss the warning signs of a tsunami and how to evacuate, and the new tsunami warning system being built in the Indian Ocean. And, the museum could show hope, resilience, and the human spirit, and help people move forward with their lives." - David Sattler

Bellingham Bay Sailing

Rack brochure for a charter sailing company for San Juan Island and bay tours. The boat was sold out for the whole summer, but the partnership eventually dissolved. I did a gorgeous web site for them as well.
